![]() Burning alcohol as fuel is rare and inefficient For any alcohol that does enter the bloodstream, the liver will process it for elimination. ![]() Some of the alcohol you drink will get processed by the stomach before it gets a chance to enter the bloodstream. ![]() The main reason why alcohol doesn't tend to lead to weight gain is that it is metabolised differently by the body, because alcohol is a toxin which the body eliminates as quickly as possible. The review also found that light to moderate intake of wine seems to protect against weight gain, whereas drinking spirits was associated with weight gain. Alcohol doesn't generally lead to weight gainĪ recent systemic review of cohort studies on alcohol and weight gain found that while there didn't seem to be a trend of alcohol consumption leading to weight gain, there was a link with heavy alcohol consumption. How are calories from alcohol content different?Īlcohol calories should be treated differently to carb and fat calories for 3 main reasons. We'll now dig a bit deeper and explain what's going on here and what a more practical calorie count for wine looks like. Calories from alcohol are processed in a very different way to calories from carbs and other macronutrients. ![]() Is that all there is to understanding calories in wine? If you're looking for low-calorie wines, browse our wine collection to find your next favourite drop. However, for a 150ml glass of wine, sugar content can range from 0.5 for some very dry wines to 30 grams for the sweetest dessert wines.Īt Feravina, we curate wines that are sugar-free, and alcohol content is capped at 13.5%, with most of our wines sitting at 12% ABV. It's harder to work out the calories from the sugar in wines since the nutritional information isn't displayed anywhere on the bottle of most wine labels, unlike alcohol content. How to calculate the calorie content of a glass of wineĮvery gram of sugar equals 4 calories, while every gram of pure alcohol contains 7 calories (or Cal for short).Īs far as the alcohol calories go, for a standard 150ml glass of wine (a typical serving size), to calculate wine calories, multiply your wine's ABV or alcohol percentage by 8.28, and you'll get the alcohol calories in a glass of that wine.įor example, if your wine's ABV is 13.5%: Any leftover residual sugar that hasn't been fermented by bacteria, or any sugar that is added to wine to enhance the flavour, will contribute to the calories in wine, as well as the alcohol. The sugar from the grape juice in grapes being turned into alcohol via the fermentation process is what turns it into wine. Since wine doesn't contain any protein or fat beyond negligible amounts, pretty much all the calories in a glass of wine come from two sources - carbs and alcohol. We'll also explore the correlation between drinking and weight gain, answer some common questions about calories in wine, and offer some advice for those watching their weight while enjoying a vino or two. Are you curious about the calorie content of your favourite glass of wine? In this blog post, we'll take a look at where calories in wine come from, and why they may differ from calories in other foods. ![]() ![]() ![]() With the technological advancements in stability and longevity, it has made our job easier. They are the ones who dictate what we collect, and at LACMA, we`ve been collecting digital photography for some time. We in the museums are in a privileged position in that we go where the artists lead us. Tim Wride, Interim Head of the Photography Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), commented: Yet museums are also open to whatever is happening at a given time. ![]() Obvious reasons for this include its handcrafted nature, depth of image, quality of tones, overwhelming beauty, lengthy tradition, and the fact that it utilizes a precious metal. Judging from auction prices and gallery exhibitions, the fine art market seems more interested than ever in the gelatin silver print. This credo was made famous by the late Robert Heinecken who said, "The photograph is not a picture of something but is an object about something."1 Photography U entering a similar phase where the handcrafted object, and the properties that make a gelatin silver print unique, are taking on a new significance. ![]() Painting did not die in 1839 it is now more important than it has been for a long time. Just as photography freed painting to do more than record a likeness or scene, digital imagery is freeing film photography from the mundane tasks of commercial and news photography that instant imagery serves so well. My students are overwhelmingly interested in making pictures instead of just learning technique, and my classes are as full as ever. One positive aspect of this drive for the latest gadget is that the technology-obsessed dilettantes show up a lot less in photography classes. All this is an attempt to mimic the traditional gelatin silver print we have been making for decades-and the result is still found lacking. Yet each year new products designed to improve our digital images are marketed as "the way to go." Crowds flock to buy a printer with the newest technology and the latest inkjet papers, and to upgrade their software, plug-ins, and print drivers. One is a reliable workhorse and the other is a fancy paperweight. Compare the Nikon FM2 I bought in 1985 for $600 to the Nikon Coolpix I bought in 2003 for $999. Consider this: how many of us have the same computer and printer as we did five years ago? It is a figure unlike the number of us who have the same camera and enlarger. Chemical darkrooms do not cost as much to set up or maintain as digital studios, and a half-life is built into the hardware and software. The gelatin silver print combines the essence of craft with the ambition of art, and, in our time of dreary automation and mediated experiences, the satisfaction, even joy, of darkroom work is undeniable.īut there are big profits to be made from digital technology. Yet, many artists have devoted decades to mastering the process. It is relatively easy to learn to make good black-and-white prints. With each advancement in digital black-and-white printing, darkroom photographers ask, why bother? We already have an excellent process with highly reliable products and suppliers. More recently, my concern was renewed when I received yet another brochure from Epson touting how their new inks work in combination with their printers to produce "real black and white prints, without any compromise." A few weeks later, this same question came up repeatedly in conversations at the annual Society for Photographic Education conference held in Chicago. At the Silver International Conference and Competition held March 3-5, 2006, at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, the main question on everyone`s mind was how the beloved gelatin silver print would survive the digital age. ![]() ![]() On a personal level, coworking offices allow small companies to have a day-to-day social outlet beyond their team, and to see other businesses experience similar growth and operational challenges. ![]() Many coworking stations are symbiotic ecosystems, where businesses can connect with freelancers, lawyers, clients, potential partners, and more. Possibly the most valuable perk of coworking is the sense of camaraderie among the coworking community members and the opportunity to network. This latter option is especially useful for companies that are remote but that still want to provide employees with an option to go to a workspace. It also makes it possible to have employees move to different locations if needed and to even allow employees to have a workspace closer to their own homes. Coworking offers the flexibility to scale staff up or down as needed without worrying about having the appropriate-sized office. Most coworking spaces offer daily, weekly, or monthly leasing (and payment) options and costs tailored to the length of contract and type of space. With so much uncertainty (and possibly a limited amount of capital), especially for newer companies and startups, a coworking office space is a very enticing option. Nowadays businesses often grow rapidly, sometimes slowly, and sadly they may downsize as well (but there is always hope for growth!). We are far from the era when businesses – whether a large corporation with multiple city offices, or a small family-owned outfit with its own floor in a local suburban office park – seemed to stay static for decades. Let’s dive into some of the other specific advantages of renting coworking space. Usually, that means a choice between coworking or finding an inexpensive renting situation like subleasing. Those at this early stage of business development are often searching for something smaller, cheaper, in a particular location, and more flexible than the types of offices their more established counterparts want. It was a bit of a craze in American life. Radium water was drunk by the rich and famous, not by the working-class girls from Newark. It was believed that radium could restore vitality to the elderly. There were also radium clinics and spas for those who could afford them. Pharmacists sold radioactive dressings and pills. It made the girls themselves glow.Īt the time, radium had been considered a magnificent cure-all, treating not just cancer but hay fever, gout, constipation, anything you could think of. Little puffs of it hovered in the air before settling on the shoulders or hair of the dial painters. ![]() There was radium dust all over the studio. (At the time radium was the most valuable substance on Earth, selling for $120,000 for a single gram-$2.2 million at today's value.) Each painter mixed her own paint, dabbling a little radium powder into a small white crucible, and added a dash of water and a gum arabic adhesive, a combination that created a greenish-white luminous paint, called “undark.” The fine yellow powder contained only a minuscule amount of radium mixed with zinc sulfide, with which the radium reacted to give a brilliant glow. Each girl had a flat wooden tray of dials beside her. ![]() The girls sat in rows dressed in their ordinary clothes and painted dials at top speed because they were paid by the number of dials they painted. The women for the most part were very pleased to have the jobs. Some started working at the plant immediately after finishing grammar school. The watch dial painters at the RLMC plant were all women, mainly teenagers, who were recent immigrants to the USA. That is what was reported in magazines and newspapers around the country. Most people believed the effects of radium were all positive. Information on the side effects of radium, however, was unavailable to the public. Von Sochocky himself had experienced the wrath of radium that had infiltrated his left index finger, and he hacked it off. The time he studied with the Curies, Pierre was heard to remark that “he would not care to trust himself in a room with a kilo of pure radium, as it would burn all the skin off his body, destroy his eyesight and probably kill him.” By that time the Curies were intimately familiar with radium's hazards, having suffered many burns themselves. Sochocky had studied under the Curies and understood that radium carried great dangers. Sochocky had invented the “paint” they used to paint watch dial numerals and hands with the luminous substance that made them visible in the dark. In 1913, Sabin von Sochocky and George Willis, both physicians, founded in Newark, New Jersey, the Radium Luminous Materials Corporation (RLMC). It was so difficult to extract from its source that only a few grams were available anywhere in the world. Marie and Pierre Curie, in 1898, discovered radium. Kate Moore's purpose was to put the radium girls center stage and tell the story from their perspective. Although two previous books ( 2, 3) had been written on the radium girls' stories, they focused entirely on the legal and scientific aspects. She walked in the women's footsteps, met their families, and visited their homes and graves and the sites of the dial-painting “studios.” The result is a magnificent but sad book. Her research took her to New York, Washington, DC, Newark and Orange, New Jersey, and Chicago and Ottawa, Illinois. In 2015, she directed a production of These Shining Lights, a play about the radium girls, and found the dial painters' stories so powerful that she was inspired to write the above-titled book. ![]() Kate Moore is a Sunday Times (London, UK) best-selling author, book editor, and ghostwriter. The Radium Girls by Kate Moore is a shocking, heartbreaking, and tragic story involving a number of mainly teenage immigrant girls in Newark and Orange, New Jersey, and in Ottawa, Illinois, who painted watch dials containing radium ( 1). ![]() ![]() We expected to find that anxiety would prompt people to sext but were surprised that comfort with intimacy related to sexting behaviors. We also found that, generally, dating anxiety from fear of negative evaluation from the romantic partner (basically, worrying about what your partner thinks of you) and having a more secure attachment style (i.e., comfort with intimacy and close relationships) predicted if someone had sent a sexually suggestive photo or video, a picture in underwear or lingerie, a nude photo or a sexually suggestive text. There were no gender differences for engaging in sexting, except that males were more likely than females to have sent a text propositioning sexual activity. We found that people in romantic relationships-whether of long or short duration-were more likely to have sexted than those who did not have romantic partners. Half of the people who took the survey were single, and about 71 percent were female. It covered questions measuring their sexting behaviors, relationship commitment needed to engage in sexting, their fear of being single, their dating anxiety and their attachment style (secure or insecure). We gave 459 unmarried, heterosexual, undergraduate students an online questionnaire to learn more about how relational anxiety influences sexting behavior. We also thought these singles would be more likely to sext their romantic partners, even when their relationship wasn’t very committed. ![]() My colleagues, Michelle Drouin and Rakel Delevi, and I hypothesized that people who were afraid of being single or had dating anxiety and who were, at the same time, anxious or insecure in their attachment style would be more likely to sext. Do people sext because of relational anxiety? You might realize that relationships may not be trustworthy, not invest in close relationships, and avoid intimacy all together. If something you wanted emotionally or physically (like comfort) went unfulfilled, you might end up anxious about relationships as an adult. From that experience, you learned that relationships are safe and reciprocal, and your attachment anxiety is low.īut if your caregiver was not so attuned to your needs, was intrusive or inattentive, you might develop what is called an insecure attachment. That means you are comfortable with close relationships because your experience paid off-Mom or Dad was there when you were distressed or hungry or cold. If your caregiver was attuned to your needs and responsive, you will develop a secure attachment. It suggests that the way you related to your caregiver as an infant (and vice versa) shapes how you come to view relationships later in life. One of the major theories regarding relationships is called attachment theory. So where does this relationship anxiety come from? ![]() So perhaps anxiety and concern about what your romantic partner thinks about you promote behaviors like sexting.Īs a human development researcher who studies how technology influences relationships, I wanted to understand if people who are anxious about dating or about what their partner thinks of them are more likely to sext. Some research suggests that people often engage in sexting after being coerced by romantic partners or to avoid an argument with their romantic partner. But according to my research, sexting is actually most likely to occur within a committed relationship. Why do people sext? Why do they send racy or naked photos or videos and sexually loaded texts?įor a short-term hookup, sexting might seem like a direct way to get what you want-or at least try to. ![]() ![]() ![]() Remember if you are doing face paint, be sure to get dressed (except for the gloves) and get your shoes on before doing your face paint.
